Did you know that stock market trading dates back over 200 years? In the US, stock market trading began during wartime as the government needed funding to back war efforts--such as financing military operations and similar expenditures. Bonds were created as a sort of “I Owe You” during these times to help generate funds for various war and defense efforts. Some of the bonds sold for various war efforts included Liberty Bonds, War Bonds, Series E, F and G bonds. The government stated it would pay back anyone who purchased a bond at a later date once the war had ended.
